Even Trapeze artists need them, so remember to use your safety net when communication online!
Most people in cyberspace are ok, but unfortunately there are a few nuts out there that can spoil things for the rest of us.
Just as you wouldn’t give your personal details to a stranger on the street, you should be careful with the information you give via email over the Net.
Here are a few things to remember when making friends online:
- Be aware - just because this Pen Pal section is for young people aged under 26, there's no way to tell if only young people are using it. It might be someone trying to trick you.
- If you receive a message that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, do not reply. Tell someone: your Mum or Dad, or a carer.
- If possible, use a disposable email address, eg. a second Hotmail or Yahoo address. Keep your main email address for people you know.
- There is no need to give details like your home address, school, mobile number, etc. to a Pen Pal. These are virtual friends, not real-life friends!
- Don't arrange to meet your Pen Pal unless your parent or carer or a sensible friend goes with you. Meet in a public place where there are lots of people around.
- Don't respond to nasty, suggestive messages, or rude pictures. Tell your parent or carer to report them to your Internet Service Provider immediately.
Always remember your Safety Net when travelling in cyberspace!
